Heating Systems 101With winter in full swing, you may be wondering how to keep your heating system running smoothly. What’s the best maintenance routine? Do you need to do anything to maintain heating systems? How do you know when something has gone wrong? And what do you do if it has?

Heating Systems 101

Before getting started on maintaining your heating system, you first need to find out what kind of heating system you have. There are a few different types of heating systems, including

  • Gas heating
  • Boiler/radiator heating
  • Wood heating

Gas Heating Systems

One of the most important things you can do if you have a gas heating system is to install carbon monoxide detectors around your home. Carbon monoxide can indicate the presence of a gas leak, and can be harmful on its own, so this will help you know right away if your heating system has an urgent problem.

Boiler/Radiator Heating Systems

You can recognize radiator heating systems by the cast-iron element standing in the corner of a room. Radiator systems use hot water or steam to heat your home and are a tried-and-true heating method. Maintaining radiator heating systems includes dusting them to allow proper airflow and prevent overheating, and having an annual maintenance check by a professional to release trapped air from the radiator and make any necessary repairs.

Wood Heating Systems

Nothing beats a classic wood-burning fireplace in coziness! When it comes to maintaining wood heating systems, make sure you have an annual chimney inspection and cleaning to prevent smoke from getting trapped in your home.

Other Heating Systems

Of course, there are a few other types of heating systems, including electric heat, heat pumps, and radiant heat.
